First and only edition of the most extensive history on the Petition offered by the nobility of the Low Countries to the Governess of the Low Countries Margaret of Parma in 1566 (The 'Smeekschrift'), requesting increased autonomy for their dominions, as well as freedom of religion and the abolishing of the Inquisition, as well as on the Verbond der edelen (Union of nobility, including the counts Egmondt and Horne who were behaeded in Brussels in 1567) during the years 1565-67. The 'Smeekschtift', and 'Het Verbond der Edelen' both mark the beginning of the Dutch revolt and the Eighty Year's War against Spain, ultimately resulting in the independence of the Dutch Republic and the Dutch Golden Age. The fourth part contains the text of many original documents: Te Water is known for his critical study of his sources and objective way of looking at past events. The Historie van het Verbond is Te Water's main historiographical work.

Jona Willem te Water (1740-1822) was an Orangist and a minister in Veere and Flushing (the preface of our book is dated Flushing, 7 May 1776), professor at the Athenaeum Illustre at Middelburg (1777) and member of the 'Zeeuws Genootschap van Wetenschappen' and the 'Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letteren' at Leiden'. In 1785 he became professor of Church history at Leiden and obtained the title of historian of Zeeland. Te Water is a very interesting figure  'between tradition and Enlightenment' as the title of a recent thesis on Te Water states.

Good set.- (Bindings sl. dam.).
