Met verscheyde en veele bygevoeghde exempelen: tot dienst ende gerief van alle notarissen, ende andere schryvers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Utrecht, Dirck van Ackersdijck, 1661. 4to. Contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine. With woodcut printer's device on title, title printed in red and black. (8), 680, (40) pp. First edition of an extensive practical manual for the notary's profession, by Gerard van Wassenaar (ca. 1589-1664), jurist, lawyer for the Court of the States of Utrecht, and notary with a practice at Utrecht since 1634. In 1650 Wassenaer had published a short introductionary school book on the same subject, called "Inleydinge tot de practyc, Ofte corte instructie, so op de forme van procederen, als op het instellen van alderhande instrumenten, contracten..". But the present "Practyk Notariael", published one year after Wassenaer's "Practyk Judicieel" of 1660, and more or less the counterpart for notaries what the latter was for lawyers, was an entirely new, almost encyclopedic manual for notaries. These two manuals, for notaries and for lawyers, were often published together, and were much used both by notaries and lawyers, and republished many times until well into the 18th century. The book treats all aspects of the notary's trade, and includes full examples of the exact language and lay-out of the various deeds and contracts. But much attention is also given to those aspects of civil law which were of special interest for notaries, like marriage and hereditary law. Wassenaer dedicated his "Practyk Notariael" to the dean of canons of the Dom in Utrecht, in gratitude for his appointment as their notary, secretary and librarian, a post which was always followed in Utrecht by the appointment to notary of the city of Utrecht itself. Good copy.- (Edges of binding damaged; fire damaged edges, not affecting text; dampstains throughout).
