(4), 72 pp. First edition of the explanation and extensive demonstration of a proportional pair of compasses, invented by Pieter Warius, notary and teacher of mathematics at Oostwoud in the Netherlands. The compasses could be used for various purposes, both in arithmetic and geometry, which is proven by means of problems posed and consequently solved by the proportional pair of compasses, as clearly explained in the text and depicted on the plates. And the book starts with explaining how to design and construct such a pair pf compasses as well as how to calculate the various tables to use with the instrument, all also clearly depicted on the large folding engraved plate and by tables and figures in text. Size of the large folding plate showing the compass is ca. 45 x 33,5 cm. Good copy, with armorial bookplate with the motto "Debita Forti".
