Lectures on metallurgy
WALLERIUS, Johan Gottskalk.Elementa metallurgiæ speciatim chemicæ conscripta atque observationibus, experimentis et figuris aeneis illustrata. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Stockholm, printed by Johan. Edman at the Uppsala Royal Academy for Carol. Abr. Askergren, 1768. 8vo. Contemporary tanned half sheepskin. With engraved title, engraved scene with coat of arms above dedication, and folding engraved plate. [16], 440 pp. First edition of Wallerius's lectures on metallurgy at the University of Uppsala. After a general introduction covering the mechanical and chemical properties of metals, as well as economic and legal aspects, the lectures discuss the location and extraction of metals, smelting, working and alloying(?), the properties of metals, and their uses in manufacturing. Johann Gottskalk Wallerius (1709-1785) practised medicine at Uppsala, when he started to develop an interest in mining science and mineralogy. He formed a mineral collection, which ultimately amounted to over 4,000 specimens. He taught chemistry to students of mining science as well as of medicine at Uppsala, and set up a small private laboratory, which increased the interest of the students in chemistry. In 1750 Wallerius was appointed the first professor of chemistry in Sweden, at Uppsala. He continued to be responsible for metallurgy and pharmacy. Old manuscript ownership and library notes in ink on inside front cover. Very good copy, with only one small marginal tear and an occasional spot. Binding slightly rubbed, but also very good. First edition of the collected lectures on metallurgy by Johann Gottskalk Wallerius.
DSB XIV, pp. 144-145; Hoover 857; Poggendorff II, col. 1252.
