London, printed by J. March, (1784). 4to. Later purple three-quarter calf with marbled boards, spine  ribbed and gilt with title lettered in gold, frontcover with title, marbled endpapers. With 3 full-page engraved plates depicting 90 species of shells, after drawings by G. Walker and engraved by D. Mackenzie. (1, 1 blank, 1), V, 25, (3 blank pp.).

First edition of a work on tiny shells found at the seashore near Sandwich, Kent by the naturalist, surgeon and topographer William Boys (1735-1803). The text is in Latin and English. The plates are engraved after drawings by G. Walker who studied the shells under the microscope. The works starts with a dedication to the  Duchess of Portland and  Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), the famous naturalist who took part in Captain Cook's first great voyage, followed by an introduction by G. Walker, bookseller at Faversham. The plates are accompagnied by an explanatory index of the species of shells, describing the places they were found and their degrees of rarity.
