Uniformly bound: contemporary mottled calf, ribbed spines gilt in compartments. With Engraved title-page for part 1 by Joh. de Mel who also engraved the 4 (folding) plates incorporated in the 'Additiones' of part 2 (= pp. LI-LIV), including Roman votive altars of the goddess Nehellennia, city walls and seals, also an engraved vignette on the title of part 2. (10), 110, (12), 292, (4), LXXX, (24) pp.; vol. 2: (2), 400 pp. Rare original edition of this important historical work on the origin and early history of Flanders by the well-known historian Olivarius Vredius (Olivier de Wree (1596-1652) from Bruges. Vredius belongs to the most prominent representatives of late-Belgian humanism and his historical works are still considered to be of high value. Pars 3 (vol. 2) is the first edition with a new title (not recorded in the Bibl. Belg.; there the title is rendered as Historiae Flandriae Christianae. Ab anno Christi 500. Clodovaei I. Francorum regis XVI. usque ad annum 767. Pepini regis Franc. XVI (Bruges, Peter van Pee, no date). Our copy prabably belongs to an edition with a new title printed by Lucas van den Kerchove in 1652. The last page (p. 400) has the words "nullis รจ vicinis ... profectus est" as the 41st line and the last line reads: "Hanc Historiam Auctor morte praeventus absolverenon potuit". Reasonable copy.- (Half-title and the map of Gaule in pars 1 missing, front cover of pars 3 almost loose and sm. tear in title, spine of vol. 1 restored).
