Bolivar's war of independance

Portrait of Simon Bolivar and 1 folding map (203 x 264 mm) of the Northwestern part of South America: Colombia, Venezuela and Guyana. (4), 412 pp. Second edition of this translation by Alphonse Viollet (b. 1798) of an account probably by Richard Longeville Vowell (c. 1795-1837) describing the military operations from 1817 to 1830 which caused the expulsion of the Spaniards from Colombia. The original work is entitled: Campaignes and cruises in Venezuela and New Granada, and in the Pacific Ocean, from 1817 to 1830, published in 1831 in London in 3 volumes. It was attributed by Luis R. Zuloaga and J. Medina to Vowell but by Vicente Lecuna to Capt. William D. Mahoney. The first edition of the French translation was published anonymously. Chapter 1-14 of the French translation by Viollet has also been translated into Spanish, under the title Campanas y cruceros. The author wrote this account after having served in the army of Chili from 1821 till 1829, during the War of Independance (1817-1830). This work contains 24 chapters, consisting of an account of events of the war alternated by descriptions of animals, landscapes and cities of the region. Very good copy.
