First edition of a posthumously published work on writing, gymnastics, music and painting by the famous Dutch scholar and scientist Gerardus Joannes Vossius (1577-1649). The second chapter deals with reading and writing and how to teach it to children. Vossius describes in chapter three the history of gymnastics, as practised by the Greek & Romans, and he gives five types of execises: running, jumping, discus throwing, javelin throwing and wrestling. The fourth chapter is on ancient and contemporary music. In the last chapter Vossius compairs the arts of painting and rethoric, and he gives a brief history of painting mentioning classical, Renaissance and 17th century painters.
In the same year ''De quatuor artibus popularibus, grammatistice, gymnastice, musice, & graphice, liber'' was also published by Blaeu in a collected edition titled ''De quatuor artibus popularibus de philologia et scientiis mathematicis  libri tres'' together with two other parts: ''De philologia liber'', and ''De universae mathesios natura & constitutione liber; cui subjungitur chronologia mathematicorum''. A second edition appeared in Amsterdam, also at Blaeu, in 1659, a third in 1660.
