VONDEL, Joost van den.
Werken.

(Amsterdam, Amersfoort, etc.), 1645-1781. 16 vols. 4to. Half calf, gilt and decorated spine with green title-label. With the ex-libris of Samuel Iperuszoon Wiselius pasted on inside of front cover in most vols. with his motto 'Dulcia non meruit, qui non gustavit amara' (Who did not taste the bitterness, does not deserve the sweet).

Luxurious uncut set of the collected works of Joost van den Vondel on large paper from the library of Samuel Iperuszoon Wiselius, uniformly bound in 16 vols and printed on extra thick paper. With many added portraits of which some are very rare. The works are not arranged chronological, but in their most common reading order.
Samuel Iperuszoon Wiselius (1769-1845) was a successful Dutch lawyer and a prominent patriot and democrat, involved in the dismantling of the Dutch East India Company and the negotiations over the Cape. He was also a poet, writer, historian and superintendent of the police. In 1817, Wiselius was appointed secretary of the literary division to the Royal Institute of Sciences (KNI) as successor to Willem Bilderdijk.
In 1835, as the head of the Amsterdam police, Wiselius was involved in controlling the tax revolts, organized by house owners at Herenmarkt square and in the Jordaan neighbourhood. Wiselius resigned in 1840, but kept his position at the KNI for a few more years until his death.
