Magnificently illustrated edition of the mock heroic poem by François Marie Arouet De Voltaire (1694-1778), glorifying Joan of Arc and telling of the misadventures of Agnes and Dorothy. It was first published at Louvain in 1755. In the present edition the work is divided in 2 parts with the poem in 21 songs. Each song is preceded by an engraved plate with lively, often erotic scenes, making a total of 22 plates (including the plate with Joan of Arc) of which 18 are done by Nicolas-André Monsiau (1754-1837) or Pierre-Clémént Marillier (1740-1808).
Although the title page says that the work was printed in L'An Troisième (or 1795) and that is the date given in the bibliographical sources cited, some of the plates are dated 1796 (pl. for song 15) or 1797. Cohen- De Ricci mentions issues with the plates with and without the lettering and the number of the songs  at the left top of the plates. The engravings in our copy have the latter numbering.

Very fine, large paper copy.
"Très belle édition." (Cohen-De Ricci) Cohen-De Ricci 1034; Graesse VI, 4793; Brunet V 1362; Bengesco 513; Rose, Register of erotic books II, 4793 (ed. 1799 and other eds.).
