Box for storing documents, used by a high VOC official in third quarter of the 18th century

[VOC].
[Wooden box of tropical hard wood].

[Colombo?], 1757. Box in the shape of a book, with brass fittings: lock, decorated corner pieces, hinges, large and smaller bosses and a large central brass ornament with the VOC monogram and the date, 1757, engraved on the middle part, flanked by two birds (eagles?) looking outward; similar decorated ornaments on the edges of the box.

Interesting VOC-box, made of tropical hard wood, for storing documents, letters, almanacs, etc., traditionally said to have been fabricated in Ceylon where the Dutch VOC was established from 1640 till 1795. Halfway the Cape of Good Hope and Batavia, Ceylon, with its capital Colombo (since 1656) and the important harbour and castle of Galle, was one of the most important establishments of the Dutch East India company (VOC).
The elegant book-shaped form, with its slightly trapeze form 'covers' could have been the appropriate piece of decoration on the desk of a higher VOC official in the time of the Dutch Governors of Ceylon, Jan Schreuder (1756-61) and Lubbert Jan, baron van Eck (1719-1765; governor from 1761-65).

In fine condition.
