Cologne, Gottfried Hirtshorn (Hertshorn, Godefridus Cervicornius Jun.), 1577. 4to. 18th-century blue wrappers with vellum label on spine lettered in ink. Title printed in red and black. 152 pp.

Rare edition of the Dutch text of the terms issued and confirmed by oath by the emperor Charles V on the occasion of his solemn entrance as Duke of Brabant in Brussels, re-confirmed in 1549 by his son and successor King Philip II. The text is printed in Cologne, outside Brabant, because of the fact that the extensive Latin commentary by the famous jurist and member of the Council of Brabant, Georgius (Joris) Vivien (1536-?) from Antwerp was not quite 'correct' during the political turmoil in the Southern Netherlands during these days. Also because of these troubles, Vivien lived in Cologne from 1570 onwards. He dedicated the work to Don Juan of Austria; the dedication on f. 1v is dated Cologne, 6 May 1577, only a year after the 'Pacification of Ghent.
The 'Blyde Incomste' was considered a strong weapon in the struggle against King Philips II, as it contained the famous article on the right of the people to oppose injustice: the fundament of the justification of the Dutch revolt agains Spain. William of Orange had also made use of it in his 'Justification' and his 'Answer' in 1568.
The printer of this arugmented and annotated 1577 edition of the Laetus introitus is the well-known publisher Gottfried Hirtshorn (Hertshorn), or Godefridus Cervicornius, who was active as a printer in Cologne from 1561 till 1577. A re-issue under a new title appeared in 1578.
Hirtshorn apparently belonged to the circle of moderate protestants who had found refuge in Cologne. He had already printed editions of the 'Blyde Incomste' in 1565 and 1566. Most of his editions were printed especially for the Antwerp market and Filips van Wesenbeke, a brother of a high ranking Antwerp magistrate, acted as his 'factor' (agent).

Good copy. (Wormholes in the inner margins of the quires in the middle, not affecting the text).
