Anklam, 1833 (printed by W. Hausschildt in Stralsund, 1834 8vo. Contemporary half calf with gilt spine, marbled boards, front cover with central gilt crowned capital 'O'. Large folding lithographed plate. 68 [= 66] pp.

Very rare and nice manual on a new, ergonomic way of carrying the heavy gear of an infantry soldier, probably a presentation copy. The very fine plate (measuring 41 x 54,5 cm., monogrammed "C.v.F.") shows 3 soldiers in the centre, surrounded by 9 smaller illustrations of the various parts of their gear. The final leaf (paginated 67-68) was originally not part of the book block (paginated up to page 64), but was added later. It comprises three letters to the author, the 'Königlich Preussischen Premier-Lieutenant im 3. Bataillon 2. Landwehr-Regiments J.Chr. Virchow: (1) letter of thanks by Prince August of Prussia, dated Oldenburg, 17 July 1834; (2) a letter by Friedrich Wilhelm notifying the author that he had been awarded with the 'rothen Adler-Orden Vierter Klasse', dated Berlin, 18 January 1835; and (3) a letter of thanks by Von Wiebel, dated Berlin, 10 January 1835. The initial "O" on the front cover perhaps refers to Oldenburg.

Good copy.- (A few minor defects).
