Perusiae (=Perugia), Andrea Brixiani, 1567. 4to. Modern half vellum. With woodcut printer's device on title, and large folding woodcut map of Malta. [4, 1 blank], 38 ll.

Rare first edition of a detailed description of the Great Siege of Malta by the Turks under command of Suleiman II, in 1565. In this famous battle, thousands were killed on both sides, until the Turks were defeated. The leading figure on the Maltese side was Jehan Parisot de La Vallette, Grand Master of the Order of Malta. His name became immortal because he started building Valletta, the actual capital of Malta, in 1566, which is a magnificent example of fortification, unrivalled in the world. Philip II of Spain had an interest in La Vallette's defence of Christianity against the Muslims, and he supported him.
The present detailed description of the siege was made by the historiographer of Philip II, Giovanni Antonio Viperano (1535-1610) from Messina, Sicily. He dedicated the work to Don John of Austria, the natural son of Charles V and Philip's half-brother, who was  predestined to be a monk, but chose a military career instead, and fought successfully against the Turks. Especially the fine woodcut map of Malta, 29 x 20 cm, is of interest and rare.

Fine copy a rare work on the siege of Malta in 1565.
