French edition of the original Italian edition Regola dell cinque Ordini d'architettura (Rome, 1562) by the Italian architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-1573), also a painter, in the service of the Farnese family. Vignola may have begun to work on his famous treatise on the architectural orders as early as 1539, when he was asked by the Academia della Virtù to make drawings of ancient Roman buildings as part of a plan to publish a new illustrated edition of Vitruvius. This Regola dell  cinque Ordini d'architettura  appeared in 1562 in Rome. Until 1700 no less than 89 editions were published.
This popular work on the 5 orders, containing also his method for calculating the correct proportions of the orders of classical architecture, was translated in several different languages including this French edition. The work together with its illustrations was enormously important and useful to practising architects who could easily carry around small copies from site to site, especially in France. This copy contains 62 plates illustrating the 5 orders. They are numbered 1-67 but plates 36, 37, 50, 52 and 62 are not in their place.

Good copy.
NUC lists 1 incompl. copy; not in BAL; cf ms. 3447-3480 (pp. 2213-2266); not in Millard, Fowler, nor Berlin Kat.
