Rare, beautifully illustrated mystic work by Frans Vervoort, a Franciscan and mystic author, born in Malines in 1490, where he also died in 1555. He was an ascetic monk, and he wrote a large number of spiritual works - very popular at the time, however circulating only in manuscript - for monasteries and laymen alike, signed with his motto "O Heere wanneer?" (O lord, when?). At the end of his life Vervoort was 'discovered' by Henricus Helstanus, his Franciscan Superior who sent some of Vervoort's manuscripts to his friend the Archbishop of Trier. The letter by Helstanus, containing  this information, is also added at the end of our edition. Vervoort did not want his works to be published under his own name, therefore they appeared under the names of the editors - here Jan Verbrugghen, who also lived at Malines. They always printed his motto on the title, so the readers could recognize the author. Before his death, three of Vervoort's works were published, including the present work, first published in 1552 at Antwerp by Hans van Liesveld, then illustrated with 14 woodcuts by Pieter van der Borcht only. The second edition was published by Simon Cock at Antwerp in 1556, with the letter by Helstanus added and with a revised text.
Our copy belongs to the third edition, also with the letter by Helstanus, and enlarged with 8 woodcuts by Pieter van den Borcht. In 1566  only, the first book was published under the author's name. When all his texts had been discovered, he was highly praised as "the greatest follower of Ruusbroec" and "a worthy successor of Herp". Later was found that his texts were mainly compilations from the best mystic and spiritual authors, which he had made accessible to the common people, writing in a popular style and in the vernacular. The woodcuts by Pieter van der Borcht (1545-1608), a highly spiritual and sensitive artist, who sympathized with men like Hiel and the secret `House of Love', are also of great interest, perfectly depicting the mystic and spiritual essence of the texts. The woodcuts are often emblematic and include short explanatory texts, like the names of virtues or vices, etc. They include views like satan sharing diner at a royal table while a skeleton is flying over, Saint Franciscus preaching to all sorts of wild animals, people shooting with various weapons on the Gate of Paradise, the stable ship of the Church, a woman playing the organ with an angel showing her the music, etc., various woodcuts signed with the monogram P.B.

Good copy.- (Title sl. dam. in upper margin (sl. affecting woodcut border) and in lower blank margin (both margins restored); leaf a8 with small central hole, affecting text on recto and woodcut on verso; final leaf lower margin strengthened w. paper strip).
