Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, red painted edges. With title-pages printed in red and black to each volume with a vignette (those of vols. 1-2 engraved, the ones in vols. 3-5 woodcut), full-page frontispiece, full-page portrait of the author in his 71st year, three folding maps and a folding plan, all engraved. Second edition of this important history of the Order of Hospitallers of Malta, or the Rosicrucians, by 'l'abbé René d'Aubert de Vertot d'Auboeuf' (1655-1735). The illustrations include a map by Guillaume Delisle of the Mediterranean area from Spain to India and the Alps to the Sahara desert, a folding plan of Rhodos and two large folding maps of 'Malthe du Gozé et du Cuming' and of the chateau and the fortifications of Malta (Valetta), dated 1724. The first edition, in 4to, had been published in 1726 in Paris. Further editions of his apparently very popular and sought-after history of the Rosicrucians appeared in 1742, 1766, 1772, 1778, 1780 followed by many 19th-century editions as well. Vertot d'Auboeuf was famous for his histories of the 'revolutions' in respectively Sweden (1695), Portugal (1712) and 'la republique Romaine' (1719), He had made such a name as historian that the Order of Malta commissioned him to edit their famous 'annales' and write the history of the Order. lding With the bookplates of Albert Louis Comte de Schulenburg.
