According to Knuttel this is the first edition of this important treatise discussing the possible truce with Spain in 1587, to which the author is strongly opposed. Bor who reprints this pamphlet for the greater part in his famous work on the Dutch Revolt (Vol. III, p. 245), suggests that the text was printed in 1588.
In support of his view Verheyden cites, among other reasons, the cruelty of the Spanish to the Indians in the New World. Verheyden also argues that Spain hides her true intentions in order to mislead the pious Dutch into accepting treacherous terms for peace. The treatise is written by the well-known humanist and orator Willem Verheyden, born in Grave in 1568, who studied in Leyden and later went to Germany and Venice for some time. Convinced that he could serve his Fatherland better with arms than with words, he entered the service of the Dutch army under Prince Maurice and served as lieutenant of the infantry. He fell during the Spanish siege of Hulst in 1596, while fighting against a large group of Spaniards.
Although it is known that the pamphlet was reprinted during the peace negotiations that were to lead to the Twelve Years' Truce in 1609, it is not clear why Typ. Bat. mentions this edition as issued after 1600 by Richard Schilders from Middelburg.
