(18), 209, (2, 1 blank) PP. The 1657 and 1672 editions put together on large paper, of the famous military "Commentaries" by Sir Francis Vere (1560-1609), one of the greatest military commanders of his time, in active service in the Netherlands from the time of Leicester, in 1585. Working in close co-operation with the Dutch forces under Prince Maurice of Orange, he step by step secured the country for the cause of independence. He was an excellent soldier, a great strategist, and a born leader and organizer, his troops standing out as the best organized and trained among the Dutch camps, but he also was quite at home on shipboard, a.o. serving in the Cadiz expedition of 1596, as well as a succesful diplomatist, enthrusted with the English-Dutch negotions about each share in the war in 1698. The culminating point of his career came when, in 1600, the States General decided to carry the war into the enemy's country. Together with Maurice he won a complete victory over the veteran Spanish troops in the Battle of Newport, one of the most desperately contested battles of the age. This was followed by the celebrated defence of Ostende from July 1601 to March 1602. After the peace made by James I with Spain, Vere retired from active service, and spent the rest of his life in the country in England, occupying himself with the compilation of his "Commentaries", written at the height of action. The style is straightforward and soldier-like, and the comments are sound and most valuable, full of interesting details and military information not easily found elsewhere. First edition, first issue 1657. Good copy, kept in slipcase, two bookplates on inside front cover. (First 3 leaves loose and restored; several plates with restorations or tears).
