American re-edition of a rare series
[VENNING, Mary Anne?].A geographical present; being descriptions of the countries of Asia, &c. Compiled from the best authorities. With representations of the various inhabitants in their respective costumes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() New York, R. & G. S. Wood for William Burgess, 1831. 12mo. Half red morocco, spine gilt in compartments, and lettered in gold. With 12 nicely hand-coloured engraved plates, all depicting the costumes of the inhabitants of several parts in Asia and Australasia. (4), 144 pp. with a List of other childern's books also published by Burgess: 7 pp. An interesting educative description of Asia, Polynesia, Australia and New Zealand that seems to be an American re-edition of a part of the series: A geographical present; being descriptions of the countries of the world. With representations of the various inhabitants in their respective costumes, written by Mary Anne Venning, first published in London in 1817 (re-editions in 1818 and 1820). A first volume on Europe was published anonymously by Burgess (in 1830 ?), see the additional List, p. 1. There also seems to exists a volume about Africa, published in the same year as our book, also anonymous. Our copy is the second part, described by Burgess in his List as: "The Geographical present, part II.; being descriptions of the several countries of Asia, Australasia, &c., with twelve beautifully coloured engravings". All this makes the authorship of Mary Anne Venning probable. The book has an educational purpose, published by William Burgess, a publisher specialised in children's books. A great part of Asia is discussed; Turkey, Palestine, Tartary, China, Laos, Ceylon, Sumatra, New Guinea, Sandwich Islands, the Eastern Island, Polynesia, New Zealand and Australia with plates of people from Palestine, Arabia, Persia, Hindostan, Goa, China, Tartary, Corea, Cochin China, Ceylon, Moluccas and the island of Tanna. Good copy with the name Elliott W. J. Morgan stamped on first fly-leaf.- (Spine rubbed, front cover half loose, insignificant waterstaining).
Br. Mus. Gen. Cat. col. 475; Osborne Collection, p. 193 (other title of the series); not in Halkett & Laing.
