VELDE, Abraham vande. ![]() ![]() ![]() Middelburg, Henrick Smidt, 1668. 8vo. Contemporary overlapping vellum with title written on spine. Sm. woodcut vignette on title, woodcut initials. (48), 488, (8). First edition of the well-known history of the Dutch Republic and the Revolt against Spain in the light of God's intentions by Abraham van de Velde (1614-1677), a minister from Middelburg who considered himself as a faithful follower of Voetsius. At least 13 editions of this popular work have been published till the 20th century (9 editions till 1800, 2 editions ed. by J. Mulder (Utrecht 1874 and 1897)). In the book Van de Velde wants to show how the Dutch Republic became one of the richest and mightiest countries in the world only through God's interventions whom he considers the ultimate acting person in history, and who elected the Northern Netherlands with its Reformed religion as his chosen people. Van de Velde didn't study history for its own sake, but to be able to make visible God's intentions and interventions. Good copy with the book plate of Dr. A.A. van Schelven and ownership's entry of Dr. D. Grosheide, librarian of Utrecht University Library till 1977.- (Binding sl. used).
