Extremely rare ordinance on guilds in Veere and the Scottish trade: no other copies traced
![]() ![]() ![]() Veere, Christiaan Hendrik Held, n.d. (ca. 1770). Two parts in 1 volume with continuous pagination. 4to. Contemporary wrappers. With woodcut coat of arms of Vere on both titles. 55, (1 blank) pp. Extremely rare Veere ordinance, no other copies traced (for example no copies in STCN, NCC, Den Zeusen Beesem or Catalogus van de Provinciale Bibliotheek van Zeeland!), in which older official documents concerning the 'Goedeluiden' or St. Jans guild are (re)published. Ad 1. The first part (pages 1-41) starts with a Naamlyst der heeren overdekens van het St. Jans of Goedeluiden Gilde te Vere, listing 13 guild-directors from 1663 to the year of the publication, i.a. A. Cuninghame (1663-1676), J.D. Heldt (1694-1703), Johan Warkier (1737-1741) and Johannes Marinissen (1756-). This list is followed by the exact text of the charter of William the Silent on the guilds of Veere, dated 15 September, 1582. Pages 7 to 21 comprise the offcial city-rules concerning the guild (undated). On pages 23 to 32 the reader finds a 'Lyste der loonen' (list of wages), divided in the chapters 'Van het Zaad', 'Van den Turf', 'Van Smee Koolen', 'Steen Koolen', 'Brandhout', 'Klaphout', 'De Waag', 'Haring &c', 'Traan &c', 'Ajuin, Appels, Nooten, Castanien', 'Van het Zout', 'Van Steen, Pannen &c.', 'Kalk en Tras' and 'Goederen in Soort'. This list is dated 17 Augustus 1715 and warranted in letterpress 'My Present Pr. Haack Kerkman'. Pages 33 to 41 are devoted to official documents (mostly extracts from city-council minutes), dated 1610-1770. Ad 2. The second part (pages 43-55) is especially important for the study of the Scottish trade in the Netherlands. Veere had a special staple contract with Scotland, dating back to 1441 (ending in 1799), granting the city a monopoly on all Scottish goods. The text of the second part deals specifically with the Scottish ships and the goods they brought to Veere, but it also lists the wages to be earned by quay-labourors of the Sint Jans guild concerning these goods. This ordinance is dated 15 January, 1687 and signed [letterpress] 'My Bekend, W. Becker'. The volume ends with 2 extracts from the minutes of the Veere town council, dated 1737 and 1740, again on the staple contract with Scotland. Good copy.- (Sl. dogeared; wrappers sl. defective on spine).
Ad 2: On the staple contract between Scotland and Vere, cf. Catalogus van de Provinciale Bibliotheek van Zeeland (1907-1913), p.145-146, and Goldsmiths' Library 3592, listing Dutch and English publications.
