Sotzmann"; and 2 folding aquatints: "Dorf des Tscheslakis in der Johnstonstrasse" and "Ein wüstes indisches Dorff an König Georg III Sund, in Neuholland". (2), 386; VIII, 406 pp. German translation by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst of George Vancouver's famous account of his exploration of the northwest coast of America and east coast of Asia. George Vancouver (1757-1798), who had participated in the second and third voyages of James Cook, was commissioned by the English monarch to continue the exploration of the northwest coast of America. He was made commander of a grand-scale expedition to reclaim Britain's rights resulting from the Nootka Convention, at Nootka Sound, to examine thoroughly the coast south of 60' in order to find a possible passage tom the Atlantic, and to learn what establishments had been founded by other powers. He left the British Isles in 1791 and sailed via Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he made a survey of the southwest coast and New Zealand, to Tahiti and Hawaii. In April 1792, Vancouver left Hawaii and sailed to the Californian coast. From 1792 till 1794 he made three journeys during which he charted the American northwest coast from 30 to 60 degrees northern latitude. In 1794 after a survey of Cape St Lucas and the Galapos Islands, he returned via Cape Horn to England, where he arrived in 1795. He immediately began his account of his journey but he died in 1789 before its completion. It was finished and published later that year by his brother John. "This voyage became one of the most important made in the interests of geographical knowledge" (Hill, p. 304). Vancouver put an end to the delusion that the subarctic seas in the direction of Greenland could be reached from Nootka Sound or any of the inlets in its vicinity and his description of the Port of San Francisco and the coasts of California in Spanish hands is most interesting. The voyage was also remarkable for the accuracy of its surveys, the charts of the coasts surveyed needing little improvemenmt to the presend day. "This work ranks with the voyages of Cook and La Pérouse among the most important of the 18th and 19th centuries" (Cox II, p. 31). The importance of Captain Vancouver's expedition is emphasized by a large number of editions of his work and by its translations into many foreign languages. The original English edition was published in London in 1798; an enlarged edition appeared in 1801. This German translation was also published as vols. 18-19 of the Magazin von merkwürdigen neuen Reisebeschreibungen in Halle. Good set.
