Finely produced chapbook with an amusing eclectic poem in all possible literary genres, from epic and tragic to vulgar, heroic and burlesque, as the author also wittingly stated in the single adjective on title.
Jean-Joseph Vadé (1719-1757) was a popular French chansonnier, composer and librettist. His collected works, which first appeared in 1755 were expanded in 1758, a year after his death. Vadé's œuvre consists of mostly opéras comiques, some with original music rather than pre-existing tunes. The collected works editions include fictional correspondence and poetry. Vadé's interest in capturing the bustling atmosphere of fish markets is evident in such works as 'Les quatre bouquets poissards' and the poem 'La pipe cassée".
The poem is divided in 4 songs, each headed by a beautiful engraved illustration, showing a merry company of men and women fighting, dancing, playing, and finally complaining about the broken pipe.

Very fine copy.
