First and only edition of the Dutch translation of this description of South America by the Spanish naval officer and mathematician Antonio de Ulloa (1716-1795), dedicated to the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, Petrus Albertus de la Parra.
The translation is after the French edition, published at Amsterdam in 1751, which was translated from the original Spanish edition of 1748: Relacion historica del viage a la America meridional ... (Madrid 1748). For the present edition all plates were newly engraved.
Antonio de Ulloa was, together with Jorge Juan y Santacilla, sent to Cadiz in 1735 to join the French expedition to Southern America. The Spanish authorities had stipulated that Charles-Marie de la Condamine's expedition to South America, organized by the French 'Académie des Sciences', should be accompanied by two Spanish officers. The two Spaniards stayed with Condamine until 1740. In 1741 Ulloa, commanding the Rosa, accompanied Jorge Juan to the Juan Fernandez Islands, where a detailed survey was undertaken. In February 1743 they sailed to Conception and after a long delay at Valparaiso, Juan and Ulloa sailed to Callao, where they joined Louis Godin in the observation of a comet before sailing from Equador for the last time. Made prisoner of war by the English, however, Ulloa was conveyed to London, where he, because of his obvious scientific ability, gained the friendship of men of science and was made a fellow of the Royal Society. Allowed to return to Spain, he arrived back in Madrid in July 1746 and his reception at court was flattering.
The task of publishing the scientific observations made during their voyages, devolved upon Jorge Juan, while compilation of the history of the expedition was entrusted to Ulloa.
