Against the Truce with Spain and against Spinola

(3, 1 blank) pp. One of the four editions of this interesting satirical poem taking a firm stand against Spinola (the spinnekop, spider) and the negotiations which would lead to the Twelve Year's Truce in 1609. The bieken (bees) stand for the States General of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands. Don Ambrogio Spínola Doria, marqués de los Balbases (1569-1630), was an Italian general in Spanish Habsburg service. In 1601 he was sent to Flanders with an army of 9,000 men to support the archduke Albrecht of Austria in his struggle with the Republic. He was appointed commander in chief of the army in 1602. On January 31, 1608 he arrived in Rotterdam for negotiations with the admirality of the Maze, which would ultimately result in the Twelve Year's Truce in 1609. Good copy.
