TRAVASSOS VALDEZ, Francisco.Da Oceania a Lisboa viagem. Offerecida e dedicada aos Portuguezes no Brasil.   Rio de Janeiro, Perseverança, 1866. 8vo. Contemporary half red painted sheep with gilt spine, lettered in gold, marbled boards and endpapers. (14), XI, 440 pp. First and only edition of this rare travel account by Francisco Travassos Valdez, who sailed from Lisbon to the Sunda islands, Timor, Java, Indo-China, India, Arabia, Egypt and back to Lisbon. The geography, economy, the customs, habits and language of inhabitants of places he visited are amongst the discussed subjects. The author dedicated his book to all his fellow Portuguese countrymen living in Brazil. After the dedication is a letter written by 12 compatriots in Brazil ordering more then 1000 copies of the book. Travassos' answer, dated Rio de Janeiro (he was apparently in Rio at the time), 11 March 1866 follows. Francisco Travassos Valdez (1825-1892) was a noted travel writer and anti-slavery campaigner. He also wrote Africa occidental. Noticias e considerações. (Lisboa 1864). Fine copy.- (Small tear in upper margin of p. 67).
