The most important 'classical dictionary' of its time
TORRENTINUS, Hermannus (Herman van der Beke).Elucidarius poeticus continens historias poeticas, fabulas, insulas, regiones, urbes, fluvios, montesque insigniores, atque huiusmodi alia, omnibus adolescentibus in poesi versantibus oppidoquam necessarius. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cologne, Eucharius Cervicornus for Godefridus Hittorpius, 1529, mense Julio. Small 8vo. 18th century parchment, spine lettered in ink. Title in elaborate woodcut border. (86) leaves, including the last blank. With: FREUDENBERG, Aethon Johann von. De abusu & impostura medicantium libellus perquam utilis iucundusque omnibus quibus cum medicis erit negotium. Qui cupis occultas medicorum vernere fraudes, me lege, commonstro, quae latuêre diu. Marburg, Eucharius Cervicorum, 1538. (23) leaves, without the last blank. Ad 1. The third edition printed by Cervicornius; the first by this printer appeared in 1523. The editio princeps of this well known and first historical, geographical and mythological dictionary, was printed in 1498 by Paffraet in Deventer, The Netherlands. Until 1540 there were at least 40 editions under slightly different titles, making the Elucidarius one of the most popular reference works of the first half of the 16th century and certainly the most important 'classical dictionary' of its time. Hermannus Torrentinus (d. ca. 1520) was born in Zwolle. He studied under Alexander Hegius at Deventer, joined the Brethren of the Common Life and taught at Groningen and Zwolle. He wrote several small books for use in his school, featuring texts by Virgil and Sabellico. The Elucidarius is in fact a concise encyclopaedia with data in the field of geography, classical literature, daily life, etc., gathered mainly from classical literature and put together in alphabetical order. Ad 2. Very rare original and only edition of the only work written by Aethon Johann von Freudenberg. It is a pamphlet against the abuses and wrong medications of bad doctors. In the extensive bibliography of the books printed in Marburg this edition is lacking! Good copies with an interesting provenance: the heirs of the famous Italian printer Francesco de Rubeis (Francesco de Rossi): 16th century inscription on the title; manuscript annotations on the last blank leaf of the first work and the last page of the second. - (Ad 1: Lower margin of title somewhat damaged).
Ad 1: VD16, T 1611; not in Adams; Ad 2: Durling 1655; not in VD16; not in Dommer, Die ältesten Drucke aus Marburg (1527-1566).
