On the Maratha Empire
TONE, William Henry.Voyage chez les Mahrattes, par feu M. Tone, colonel d'un régiment d'infanterie Mahratte, traduit de l'anglais par M. M-L., et publié avec des notes sur l'histoire, le gouvernement, les moeurs et usages des Mahrattes, rédigées en forme de glossaire; par L. Langles, conservateur-administrateur des Mss. orientaux de la bibliothèque du roi, membre de l'institut, etc. ![]() ![]() Paris, Imprimerie d'Éverat, 1820. 12mo. Original printed wrappers with large illustrations on spine and both sides, preserved in a black morocco gilt slipcase. With engraved frontispiece depicting a Mahrat soldier and his wife, beautifully coloured by hand. (4), XXIV, 350 pp. Beautiful work on the culture of the Marathas in India, here published as part six of the Collection portative de voyages. The original English edition appeared in Bombay in 1798, under the title: A letter to an officer of the Madras establishment, being an attempt to illustrate some particular institutions of the Maratta people, principally relative to their system of war and finance. Also an account of the political changes of the Empire in the year 1796 .... The work contains the letters that William Henry Tone (d. 1802), officer in the British army, wrote during his stay in India to his friend, colonel Malcom. When Tone wrote these letters, the Marathas still had their own independent state. At the time this French translation appeared, however, they were, after three wars (1775-1782; 1803-1805; 1817-1819), defeated by the British, and as a consequence belonged to the British Empire. The translator and compiler of these series, Louis-Mathieu Langlès, was a noted French orientalist and specialist in Indian culture. He was also in charge of organising a School of oriental languages to be attached to the National Library in Paris. Nice uncut copy.
Not in Chadenat, Lach & Van der Kley, nor in Gay; only 1 copy in the NCC, BNF and NUC.
