's-Gravenhage, widow of J. Allart, 1824-1825. 2 vols. 8vo. Orginal boards, uncut. 2 handcoloured engraved title pages and 4 coloured aquatint illustrations. XVI, 250; (2), 264 pp.

Isaac Titsingh, born at Amsterdam ca. 1740, went when still a child to the East Indies where he stayed most of his life and served as a State-Councillor and ambassador and also between 1778 and 1788 as head of the Dutch factory at Decima in Japan. Not untill 1809 he returned to Holland from where he soon moved to Paris on account of the political situation of these days. In Paris he began preparations for the publication of his notes and manuscripts from his rich collection he build up during his stay in the East, part of which collection is listed at the end of the first part in the present work, but he died suddenly in 1812.
Both a French and an English publisher must have got hold of Titsingh's papers as they appeared in Paris in 1819 Cérémonies usitées en Japon pour les mariages et les funérailles... and in 1820 Mémoires et anecdotes de la dynastie regnante des Djogouns..., and in London in 1822 Illustrations of Japan..., which is not a direct translation of the two earlier French books but which do cover the same grounds. The present work is the Dutch translation of the English version. Strangely enough the Dutch translator claims in his Preface that there never was any French edition. One of the beautiful handcoloured plates is a plan of the Dutch Factory at Decima near Nagasaki.
