Amsterdam, for the heirs of Hendrik van Munster and Son & Johannes van der Hey and Son, 1841. 8vo. Original blue wrappers. Large folding engraved plate showing the orbit of the globe around the sun. VI, 259 pp.

Rare second (commercial?) edition of this educational geographical and cosmographical work on the general knowledge of the globe, explained for a broad public. Timmer wrote this work as an answer to the competition organized by the 'Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen' (Society for the benefit of all people). According to the preface, signed by the secretary of the Society P.M.G. van Hees, and dated Amsterdam 17 December 1840, it had been the third time that the question was put forward and at last the prize, consisting of ten gold ducats and a gold medal, could be awarded with honor in 1840 to Geurt Kornelis Timmer Jr, a school teacher at Arnhem.
In 16 'lectures' Timmer treats in a popular way the shape, movements and orbit of the globe as well as its natural history: its mountains, volcano's, seas, lakes, rivers, climate and products. Important for the history of education in the Netherlands.
Originally the text was published in 1840 (many copies in the Dutch National catalogue) in the series of the Society: Nieuwe werken der Maatschappy tot Nut van 't Algemeen; the present second edition, probably especially printed for the commercial market, has the year 1841 on the title, is newly set and printed in a slightly smaller format. No copies of this edition could be found.
Good copy.
Brinkman (1858), p. 670: only ed.: 1841; NCC, no copy of the 1841 ed.
