Elzevir edition?
![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Pierre Marteau, 1703. 12mo. 19th century light brown morocco, spine ribbed and richly gilt, with triple gilt fillet borders on sides, richly gilt inner dentelles, g.e. (HARDY). With fine engraved frontispiece with portrait of Ulenspiegel and an owl looking at itself in the mirror. (8), 247 pp. Early 18th century edition of the popular story of Tyl Ulenspiegel, also in small size and well produced. The present edition contains a preface to the new edition and 54 stories of Ulenspiegel's adventures. Here also an epitaph and the last will of Ulenspiegel in verse is added at the end. W. Willeford, in "The Fool and his Scepter", calls the present an "Elzevir edition", which could be true as the publisher's name Pierre Marteau was a pseudonym used by various publishers since 1663, often in combination with a fictitious address, mostly Cologne. The engraved frontispiece is identical with the one used in the edition by Chevalier. Fine copy.- (Faded old red-ink annotations on first and last blanks).
Koopmans-Verhuyck 40; Lappenberg 61; Splittgerber 31; Brunet V, 1005; Graesse VII, 516-517; Goedeke I, 347, 19; cf. Willeford, The Fool, p. 41; not in Willems, Les Elzevier.
