Desen lesten druc grootelijcx vermeerdert ende verbetert. Antwerp, Herman Monicx, 1613. 8vo. Contemporary vellum, remnants of ties, red painted edges. Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut initials. (32), 213 (10) pp.

Extremely rare edition of a textbook on the notary's practice (we found no other recorded copies!), treating subjects such as laws of inheritance, civil law and forms for acts and legal instruments for different kinds of mandates, with many examples. It is written by Jacob Thuys, who was a notary in Antwerp and who died there in 1585. For this work, Thuys included translated parts of the medieval treatise Ars Notarius and French and Latin works on the subject. Thuys mentions this in the preface of the Antwerp edition of 1590.
The work is dedicated to Joachim de Buschere, secretary-general of the King's council in Brabant by Jacques Thuys and dated Antwerp, 16 August 1613. Especially written for the offices of notaries in the provinces of Flanders and Brabant, the work was also intensively used in the northern provinces. This was because, according to Pitlo, the other known (translated) notary works were mainly on the 'chancellors style', while Thuys' work is more relevant for acts of private law. It was also one of the first notary books in Dutch instead of the usual Latin.
The first edition was published in 1585, just like this edition in Antwerp. Pitlo mentions that the work has been reprinted many times, also in Amsterdam, Rotterdam (Van Waesbergen, 1628, 1631) and The Hague (Aelbrecht Hendricsz, 1596, 1610), and that from 1585 to 1640 fourteen editions are known. The University of Antwerp records another 1613 edition printed in Antwerp by Gheleyn Jansens.

Good copy.- (Waterstain on front cover, first lvs. a bit frayed).
