Coimbra, Joâo Alvarez, 1554. 4to. 20th-century Portuguese tree calf, spine ribbed and gilt with red morocco title-label. Title and preliminaries supplied in neat manuscript facsimile, numerous charming woodcut initials in text. (8), ccci (=303), (1 blank, 20) pp. Estimated and rare copy of a biography on Thomas à Becket (ca. 1118-1170), bishop of Canterbury. The biography is based on earlier biographies written by Alan of Tewkesbury, Herbert of Bosham and John of Salisbury. This is the second work printed by Alvarez, who had a printing-office together with João de Barreira until 1553. This copy used to be part of the Azevedo-Samodães collection, renowned as "one of the best collections of Portuguese books" (Borba de Moraes). Good copy, from the library of Condes de Azevedo e de Samodães, the sale-description tipped onto the front free endpaper.- (Several lvs. rest.).
