A Jesuit missionary on Confucius and religion in China

[THOMAS, Antoine].
Brevis relatio eorum, quae spectant ad declarationem Sinarum imperatoris Kamhi circa caeli, cumfucii, et avorum cultum, datam anno 1700. Accedunt primatum, doctissimorumque  virorum, & antiquissimae traditionis testimonia. Operâ P.P. Soc. Jesu, Pekini pro Evangelii propagatione laborantium. Iuxta exemplar impressum Cantone ex Peckinensi.

Augsburg & Dillingen, Joannes Caspar Bencard, 1703. 8vo. Contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine. (2), 85, (1) pp.

Very rare first European edition of this work on the religious and cultural circumstances in China at the end of the 17th century, for instance the cult of Confucianism, written by Jesuit vice provincial in China, Antoine Thomas (1644-1709). The original edition was printed in the Imperial palace in Peking in 1701 from xylographs (woodcuts) of the whole pages with Chinese characters, in 4to. Thomas embarked for China in 1680, where he arrived in 1685. He succeeded  the famous Father Ferdinand Verbiest as president of the mathematics tribunal. This account relates to Ch'ing Shêng-tsu (b. 1654), Emperor of China 1662-1722, and the 'cult' of Confucianism in the country.

Good copy of this very rare work, with bookplate of the Baron Horace de Landau and with small stamp 'Cast Lovat' on title.- (Some occasional browning; fore-edges of both sides of the binding are partly eaten away by mice; lower right corner of title missing without loss of text).
