Early 19th-century dark blue morocco, sides with elaborately gilt ornamental border decoration with triple gilt ruled border, richly gilt and decorated spine with title lettered in gold, gilt sides, marbled edges and endpapers. Vol. I: (4), LXX, (2), 1-134 (4), 135-236 (80). Vol. II: (4), 1-388 (i.e. 390), (4), 389-412 (i.e. 391-414); VII (1), 45 (3) pp. Extensively annotated British standard edition of the works of the Greek lyrical poet Theocritus by Thomas Warton. This classical text is handsomely printed with wide margin at the Clarendon Press, Oxford, in 1770, with no sparing of details on the title-pages. The Curæ posteriores by Jonathan Toup at the end of vol. 2 has a separate titlepage and pagination, and was published at London by J. Nourse in 1772. Thomas Warton (January 9, 1728 - May 21, 1790) was an English literary historian and critic, as well as a poet. In 1785, he was appointed Camden Professor of History, as well as poet laureate. He was a friend as well as a rival of Samuel Johnson, and his poetry was greatly influenced by earlier English poets, like Chaucer, Drayton, Fairfax, and Spenser. Jonathan Oannes Toup (1713 - January 19, 1785), English classical scholar and critic, was born at St. Ives in Cornwall, and was educated at a private school and Exeter College, Oxford. This copy earlier belonged to H.H. Sills, classical lecturer at King's College, Cambridge and John Sparrow, another classical scholar who used to be a warden of All Souls College in Oxford. Very fine set with ms. ownership's entry of H.H. Sills dated April 1902 and pasted bookplate of John Sparrow on flyleaves.- (Very minor minor spotting and browning).
