Contemporary calf, ribbed spine with title lettered in gold. Woodcut initials and tailpieces. (40), 70, 298 pp. First and only edition of an edifying protestant religious work on the theological implications of disasters in general and floodings in particular, published only half a year after the disastrous flooding of the rivers Maas and Waal around Christmas 1740 which inundated large parts of the Dutch province Gelderland like the Betuwe, Altena, Lant van Maas en Waal, Heusden, Buuren and Culemborg. Wilhelmus Themmen (1696-1764) was an orthodox minister at Arnhem who wrote the book to make clear that it was God who punished the Dutch population by opposing this flood of water against the flood of serious sins perpetrated by the Dutch in recent times. He also wants to warn for future disasters and adds prayers and lamentations to avert these disasters. Themmen dedicated the book to Anna Margarieta, baroness of Bentink, widow of Arent Baron of Wassenaar, Lord of Duivenvoorde, Voorschoten, etc., dated Arnhem, 15 May 1741 (p. (3-31)). The fore-word on p. (32-40) is dated Arnhem 15 June 1741. At the end is a 'Naaricht' with reports of the latest storms (p. 291-294) and an addendum with the damage in Groningen and East Friesland which was the result of the flooding on Christmas 1717. Good copy, authorized by the author: his autograph signature is on the verso of title.- (Binding sl. rubbed).
