Two Easy Sisters in interesting Dutch wrappers
H.S.The history of the Davenport Family: in which is displayed a Striking Contrast between Haughty Indolence and Healthful Activity, in the Characters of the Young Davenports, and their Cousins Sophia and Amelia Easy. Interspersed with Moral Reflections. By H.S. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() London, Printed for E. Newbery, (1791). 12mo. Contemp. Dutch colour-printed flowered wrappers. With 6 full-page engraved plates, including the frontispiece, unsigned. 120 pp. Charming and rare chapbook edition of the story of "The two Easy sisters" visiting the Davenport family for Christmas. Among the presents exchanged during the "Twelfth Night" party are "The looking-glass for the mind", "Blossoms of Morality", "Sandford and Merton", and "The game of human life", all clearly reflecting the moral standards for youth of the period. At the end the anonymous author promises a next volume for next Christmas, "if possible, before that time", in which he intends to "put the Miss Easys under Mrs. Davenport's care". It took a while, but a continuation was published in about 1795. One of the fine engraved plates show the five little Davenport children doing their morning school exercises in the family's private class room. Of special interest is the fact that our copy was contemporarily bound in its charming colour-printed wrappers in the Netherlands, as is proved by the inner paper used, part of a discarded Dutch printer's leaf with the printed text: "Vaderlandsche Historie, vervolg op Wagenaar. XIII". So, the book-blocks, or probably the English printer's plano leaves were exported to the Netherlands, where they were bound for sale in the Netherlands. Or were the books originally printed in the Netherlands for the publisher Elisabeth Newbury and sent - bound in wrappers - to England? Nice copy.- (Sm. marginal defect to one leaf; sl. dog-eared).
Osborne Coll. II, p. 930.
