Curious Italian poetical baroque work of more than 10.000 lines
TESAURO, Emanuele.Patriarchae sive Christi servatoris genealogia. Per mundi aetates traducta, a D. Emanuele Thesauro. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Milan, Io Bapt. Bidellius, 1645. 8vo. Contemporary boards covered with coarse paper. With an engraved allegorical title-page by Christophoro Bianchi (or Blanco, Blancus or Blanc), nice woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials, one beautiful engraved plate representing Adam and Eve signed also by Blancus ("Inc. Mediolani") and 5 titles of different chapters with in elaborate woodcut borders with the printer's device of Bidelli in the lower border. (16), 224 pp. Probably the very rare first edition of this curious Italian baroque work, covering in verse the period from Adam and Eve until the birth of Christ, written by Emanuele Tesauro (1592-1675), one of the most interesting figures of the Italian "concettismo". That period is divided into 6 ages, each part containing the genealogy of the patriarchs of the Old Testament and Latin poems representing their history and symbolic value in relation to the birth of Christ treating in a symbolic way Christ's genealogical descent from Adam. The six ages are: Mundi pueritia (pastores), Mundi adolescentia (milites), Mundi juventus (duces), Mundi virilitas (reges), Mundi senectus (solitarii) and Nova aetas (sancti). On verso of the title is printed "Reimprimatur", what indicates that this edition probably is not the first. As the last verse ends with the date 1643 and the dedication by the printer Io. Bapt. Bidellus to the Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan Vesare Monti is dated 6.10.1644, we can presume that perhaps there could be an earlier edition of 1644. Emanuele Tesauro was born in Torino. He was of noble birth and entered the Compagny of Jesus at the age of 20. Good copy.- (With the ownership's entry of Fran. Jos. Gylen (?), dated Aug. 1713, handwritten on inside of front cover, binding slightly damaged).
De Backer Sommervogel col. 1944 (ed. of 1654); Oberlé, Poètes néo-latins, 499 (without pl.); Vinciana 3151; NUC mentions editions of 1551, 1557 and 1561.
