Rare complete first edition of this exuberantly illustrated highlight of 19th century Dutch topography by Johannes Leonardus Terwen (Dordrecht 1816-1873). In 1840 he was a teacher at an elementary school in Gouda, later he became a teacher at the Latin school in the same town. Terwen wrote several works on the history and topography of The Netherlands, of which this one is the most well-known. Furthermore he wrote and translated various essays on the general history of The Netherlands.
The beautifully steel-engraved plates depict views of numerous cities and villages of the Dutch provinces , such as Amsterdam, Haarlem, Alkmaar, Hoorn, Edam, Utrecht, Leyden, Delft, Rotterdam, Middelburg, Tiel, Harderwijk, Deventer, Kampen and Franeker. The author himself, G.M. Kurz, J. Poppel, F. Foltz, L. Oeder and J.M. Kolb are amongst the gifted steel-engravers who contributed to this work. The very decorative and charming single plates are much sought after, which is the reason that a lot of copies of this work are incomplete. Bodel Nijenhuis mentions that the work was published in 48 issues, but that it remained unfinished.

Fine set.- (Sl. foxing on frontispieces and some plates).
Bodel Nijenhuis 337k; De Buck 589 (ed. Breda, 1875-1876); NNBW II, pp. 1419-1420; Tiele 1086.
