Venetia, Antonio Bariletti, 1630. Folio. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece, engraved portrait of the author, and 48 fine engraved plates on fortification, 11 double-page, by Fillippo Sadeler. (16), 83, (1 blank); 83, (1 blank); 128 pp.

Beautiful illustrated early work on the art and science of fortification, first published in 1624. Francesco Tensini, as he states on the title of his book, had been a military engineer and officer in the service of the Duke of Bavaria, of the Spanish in the Dutch war, and of the Emperor Rudolf II, at the moment being a condottieri of the city of Venice. According to Jähns, Tensini's theories on fortification are much the same as those of his countryman Alessandro di Grotti, or Alexander de Groote, with whom he had worked together when in the Bavarian army, which is of interest as together they worked out some revolutionary new ideas.
Good copy.- (Recased, with new endpapers; one corner sl. dam.).
Cockle 813 (ed. of 1624 with 44 plates only); Jähns II, p. 1098; Jordan 3743.
