To prevent the destruction of Jerusalem and the Dutch Republic
TEELLINCK, Willem.Zephaniae waerschouwinge, om te voor-comen den onder-gang Jerusalems: oock passende op de tegenwoordige ghelegentheyt onses weerden Vader-lands. ![]() ![]() Middelburg, Hans van der Hellen for Marten Jansz. Brandt, Amsterdam, 1623. 4to. Contemporary half calf, piece of paper with title written in ink pasted on spine. With interesting printer's device on title with the words from Luke 24: "Brande ons herte niet in ons als hy met ons sprac op den weghe". (8), 156 pp. First edition of one of the puritan and edifying works by the reformed minister of Middelburg Willem Teellinck (1579-1629): Zephaniae waerschouwinge, om te voor-comen den onder-gang Jerusalems: oock passende op de tegenwoordige ghelegentheyt onses weerden Vader-lands (Zephania's warning, to prevent the destruction of Jerusalem; also fit for the present condition of our dear country). A second edition appeared in 1659 as part of the first volume of Teellinck's Works. After Teellinck had finished his law studies with a doctorate degree from Poitiers in 1603 he experienced a profound spiritual reform in England in the circles of pietist Puritans. As a result he decided to study theology at Leiden. In 1607 he was attached to the reformed church at Middelburg, where he lived until his death. With his many works Teellinck intended to introduce into the Republic the spirit of English pietist Puritanism. On the one hand he tried to stimulate personal piety, on the other hand he levelled criticism at various ethical and religious abuses and errors, and aimed for a complete reform in all areas of life as certainly also in the present work. With his books he has exerted a truly enormous influence on theologians and parishioners of the seventeenth century alike. Teellinck is therefore generally seen as the father of the influential reformed pietist movement within the Dutch Reformed Church, known as the 'Further Reformation'. The best known representative of the Further Reformation, the famous Utrecht professor Gisbertus Voetius, was very much impressed by Teellinck's works. Most of his works have been published by the Amsterdam publisher Marten Jansz. Brandt, who was the initiator of publishing commercial oeuvre-lists to be printed on the spare pages of his publications. The very first was an oeuvre-list of Willem Teellinck, a new departure in the advertising strategy of the book trade. Good copy with manuscript annotations and proverbs on the fly-leaves by Bernard Rip, dated 1770.- (Some faint waterstaining at places).
