IDEM. Carmina funebria, quae magnorum aliquot, clarorum que virorum felici memoriae dicavit. Nuremberg, Christophor Lochner, 1602. Title-page surrounded by an ornamental woodcut border. (38, 2 blank) pp.

Third edition of an emblem book by Nicolaeus Taurellus (1547-1606), German philosopher and professor of medicine and physics at Basle and Altdorf. "Apparently this emblem book was intended as an album amicorum" (Landwehr). On the title-page it is falsely printed that the present work is the "edition secunda". The illustrations are partly imitated from Jost Ammans' Stamm- und Wappenbuch. By 1580, Taurellus had left Basel to take up the chair of physics and medecine at the newly founded university of Altdorf where metaphysics early became an important part of the curriculum.

Good copy.- (Manuscript owner's names in ink on title; small light stains on 2 emblems).
Ad 1: Landwehr, German Emblem Books, 588; Praz 512 note; ad 2: STC German 17th century T140 (bound with the 1602 edition of the first work, also published by Lochner).
