TALLEMANT, Paul.Le voyage de l'Isle d'Amour à Licidas.- Le second voyage de l'Isle d'Amour à Licidas. ![]() ![]() Paris, Charles de Sercy, 1663-64. 2 works in one. 12mo. (4), 54, (2); (2), 55, (3) pp. Rare first editions of two charming works, in prose and in verse, with ingenious comments on the 'cartography of love' by Paul Taillemant (1642-1712), a French clegyman and literary man, who became member of the Académie française in 1666. The 'Voyages' met with great success at the time of their publication. The first work was reprinted by several other printers in Paris in the same year (Jean Guignard and Louis Billaine), and also in 1664. The second voyage also in 1664 in Paris by P. Trabouillet and Barbin. Both works were published under the title Le Voyage et la conqueste de l'Isle d'Amour, passe partout des coeurs' in 1675. The work has been translated into Russian and iinto English by the famous female writer Aphra Behn with the title A Voyage to the Isle of Love. Behn's translation was published for the first time in 1684 in her Poems on Several Occasions. The work is an account from Lisander to his friend Lysidas about his trip to the Isle of Love; it includes the revealing insights Lisander gained on the nature of this feeling. It is a so-called 'voyage imaginaire allégorique', inspired by the genre of the 'sentimental cartography' very much in fashion at the time. The places visited are under the patronage of figures like Respect, Concern, Pride, Mugginess, Discration, and , in the second part coquetry and Gallantry. Paul Tallement is the nephew of François Tallemant the Elder and of Gédéon Tallemant des Réaux. Fine copy in beautiful bibliophile binding, with bookplate with initials 'CRL' and motto 'Vita sine literis mors est' pasted on inside marbled endpaper.
