(16) + 224 + (16) pp. Ad 1: The fourth edition of P.C. Hooft's authoritative translation of Tacitus' De situ, moribus et populis Germaniae, the most detailed early description of the Germans and Germany, written at the end of the first century AD, enlarged with extensive annotations. The first edition of Hooft's translation was published in 1684, but written by Hoofd some decades earlier as a preparation and exercise for his famous historical work, his Nederlandsche Historien (1642). Added to this edition is the related work on the early Dutch history and antiquities by the world-famous Dutch legal historian Hugo Grotius on the same subject. It is the translation by Johan Gorris, first published in 1681. The work is illustrated with two plates showing the oldest cities Dordrecht, Nijmegen and Vroonle (Vronla), the most important city in the northern part of Holland, which was devastated in 1280. Ad 2: Second edition of an adaptation of Richard Verstegen's Nederlantsche antiquiteyten ... (Antwerp 1613) by the publisher Jacob van Royen (active in Amsterdam 1671-1717). The first edition of this adaptation had appeared just a year before in 1700 (8vo, 244 pp.). Re-editions were published in 1715, 1733 and 1756. Sometimes the work is also attributed to Cornelis van Alkemade. The text is an early mixture of history and geography. The plates are mostly by the well-known engraver J. Goeree: a historical map of the Netrherlands, plates of the archaeological Nehalennia-findings of ca. 1648, the historical inhabitants of the Netherlands: a 'Goth', a 'Wandaal', a 'Sweef', a 'Heruler', a 'Gepider', a 'Markoman, a 'Quaade', idols of the sun, moon, the idols 'Tuisco', 'Wodan', 'Thor', 'Friga', 'Seater', and topographical plates (2 on a page) of the Muiderslot, the House at Woerden, the manor houses te Merwe, Ter Aa, Ter Kleef, and Brederode, the castles of Abcoude, Egmond op de Hoef, and Purmerend, the Egmond Abby, and the Chapel at Heiloo. The book is also dedicated to Ludolf Smids. Ad 1: Leendertz, Bibliogr. Hooft, nr. 142; Termeulen/Diermanse 704; ad 2: Haitsma Mulier/van der Lem 16; Van der Aa, 16, p. 534.
