Traduit de l'Anglois par (J.) Bion. Amsterdam, 1757. 19th century vellum, gilt-lined, with red title-label on spine. With 2 folding engraved plates, one of the solar and one of the stellar composition. XVI, 271, (1 blank) pp.

Learned theological work by the English divine Tobias Swinden, first published at London under the title "An Enquiry into the Nature and Place of Hell" in 1714. Tobias Swinden (died in 1719), was educated at Cambridge, and was appointed Rector of Cuxton in Kent in 1688, and Vicar of Shorne in the same county in 1689. In spite of its strict scholarly approach, the work became rather popular, no doubt because of its intrigueing subject. The translation into French was made by Jean Bion, Minister of the English Church at Amsterdam, and was dedicated to Prince Willem Karel Hendrik Friso of Oranje Nassau.

Good copy.- (Binding sl. soiled; with 2 bookplates).
