First edition in this form, with the text by Franciscus Sweertius, of the beautiful grotesque ornamental borders, designed by Hans Vredeman de Vries, (ca. 1527-ca. 1604). Hans, or Johannes Vredeman de Vries was a famous Dutch architect and draughtsman, known in the Low Countries as "the King of Architects". These grotesque ornamental designs were first published by Gerard de Jode at Antwerp about 1590 under the title "Icones Duodecim Caesarum Romanum". All early editions are very rare, and the present first edition in bookform is of the utmost scarcity, as the plates were much used as models by designers. All plates here in fine strong impressions.

Fine copy, with the armorial bookplate of Phillip Carteret Webb.- (Binding sl. rubbed; some sl. thumbing and staining).
Ornamentprenten I, Rijksprentenkabinet, 174 (ed. of 1612, plates only) Funck p. 398 Berlin Katalog 227 (plate-series De Jode) Hollstein X, 445-457 (plate-series De Jode).
