Perpignan, Luis Roure, 1630 (colophon: 1629). 4to. Contemporary mottled calf. With title printed in woodcut border with large woodcut coat of arms; interesting woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. [8], 379, [1 blank] ll.

Rare second edition of an encyclopedic work on all the arts and sciences as well as their practitioners by Cristóbal Suárez de Figueroa (1571-1645). The first edition was published by Luis Sanchez in Madrid in 1615.
The book is partly a translation, partly an adaptation of the Italian work by Tomaso Garzoni (1549-1589): La piazza universale di tutti le professioni del mondo (1585). There are 111 articles on all sorts of professions or practitioners of the arts and sciences such as astronomy, astrology, anatomy, perspective, printing, etc. with chapter titles like "De los governadores", "De los Religiosos", "De los Doctores de Leyes, o Iurisconsultos", "De los professores", "De los Matematicos", "De los Filosofos", "De los que componen libros", "De los Cosmografos", "De los Musicos".

Suarez has Garzoni's unreadable and bulky encyclopaedic portrayal of the life and customs in 16th-century Italy skillfully transformed into a more readable and very interesting book adapted to Spanish circumstances at the beginning of the 17th century. Many interesting 'Spanish details' are added, for example descriptions of a Spanish housekeeping, bullfights, Madrid at the beginning of the 17th century (San Felipe and Puerta de Guadalajara), musicians and their instruments, fighting in Spain, etc., mirroring early 17th-century Spanish daily life and culture in an unequalled way.
The well-known article on America is on fols. 178-180. Also Australia and Pedro Fernandez de Quiros are described. The preliminaries include the famous Encomio al arte del ilustrado by Raymond Llull. The work is dedicated by the printer to Hieronymo Perarnau, Cavallero Catalan.

Some spotting, staining and browning, several ll. seriously browned; many marginal annotations and underlinings in ink, binding rubbed. Reasonable copy with ownership's entry on fly-leaf and title: " Francesco Borgez ...(?).
