Extremely rare German translation of six letters denouncing Dutch tolerance and attacking Spinoza
[STOPPA, Giovanni Battista (Jean Baptiste STOUPPE)].Der Hollander Religion. In unsderscghielichen Brieffen, welche ein Officirer aus der Frantzösischen Armée, ahn einen Professoren Theol. der Statt Bern geschrieben, vorgestelt. ![]() ![]() ![]() S.l., no date. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, with title lettered in gold, gilt binding edges. 98, (2, blank) pp. (Collation: A-M4, N2). Extremely rare copy of the first and only edition of the translation into German of the original booklet La réligion des Hollandois (Paris 1673, and Cologne, 1673) by the Swiss colonel Giovanni Battista Stoppa (or Jean Battiste Stoupe, 1624-1701), one of the officers of Louis XIV's troops in Utrecht during the French occupation in 1672-73. The book is very important for the history of Dutch tolerance and religious circumstances in the Republic. Stoupe, born in Chiavenna, just south of Switserland, was a late Reformed minister and spy for Cromwell. There are also translations of the book into English (London 1680), Italian (Paris 1674) and two into Dutch: De Gods-Dienst Der Hollanders: Vertoont in verscheide brieven, geschreven door een Amptenaar in's Konings Leger, aen een Leeraar ende Profeßor in de God-geleertheid der Stad Berne. Uit de Fransche-Taal in het Nederlandsch over-gezet (Amsterdam, C. van der Gracht, 1673, and Cologne 1673): "Hiervoor in Duits vertaald" (before this edition the text had been translated into German). An anonymous reaction appeared already the next year in German: Gründtlicher Bericht Der Hollander Religion und andere obschwebende Welt-Händel betreffend: uber sechß Epistelen, so vor etliche Monathen auß Utrecht an einem Professori Theologiæ zu Bern in der Schweitz geschrieben, und in der Welt verspreyt worden. S.l., 1674. 4°, also in Dutch translation: Grondig bericht van de godsdienst der Hollanders, strekkende tot wederlegging van zeker ongenoemt schryver. Translated from the German. Amsterdam, 1674. In 1675 another reaction was published, written by Joh. Braun, La véritable religion des Hollandois. Avec une apologie pour la religion des Etats Généraux des Provinces Unies, contre le libelle diffamatoire de Stoupe. Amstyerdam, 1675. This book, comprising 6 letters written from Utrecht to a reformed minister in Geneva between 4 and 19 May 1673, is written to warn the Swiss for the dangerous religious circumstances in the Dutch Republic, and at the same time it is a justification of a reformed minister for taking part in the (Catholic) French attack on and occupation of Holland. Given how far Dutch toleration went, Stoupe asserted, it is wrong for Swiss Calvinists to tie themselves to the Dutch as religious brethren, and furthermore, Swiss soldiers could happily serve the 'most Christian King' Louis XIV in his war against the United Provinces: "there are Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Arminians, Anabaptists, Socinians, Arians, Quakers, Libertines, etc. ... I am not even speaking of Jews, Turkish and Persians". Especially Spinoza was his black sheep: "(Spinoza) ... who has a great following ... He was born Jew and has not swore off allegiance to the Jewish religion ... He is a wicked and very bad Jew ...", and in German: "In seinen Redenspricht er öffentlich dass Got kein Wesen sey, welches mit Verstand, vollkomenheit, und unendlicher glückseligkeit, gleich wie wir uns einbilden, begabet; sonders nur eine Krafft und Bewegung der Natur, welche in allen Creaturen ausgebreitet ist". Later that year he even invited Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) to Utrecht to discuss with him. Good copy.- (Top of spine sl. dam.)
