Important Elzievier editions of two influential works by Simon Stevin
STEVIN, Simon.La Castrametation ... selon l'ordonnance & usage de tres-illustre ... Prince et Seigneur Maurice, par la grace de Dieu Prince d'Orange. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2nd revised and corrected edition. Leiden, Matthieu and Bonaventure Elzevier, 1618. Folio. Contemporary limp vellum. With woodcut printer's mark on title-page, fine engraved portrait of Maurice, Prince of Orange, an full-page engraving of his coat of arms and device (in this copy printed upside down) and numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. (8), 54, (2 blank) pp. With: Idem. Nouvelle maniere de fortification par escluses. (2nd French edition). Ibid., iidem, 1618. With woodcut printer's mark on title-p. (identical to the one in the preceding work), 38 woodcut ills. (partly full-p. and 1 illustration folding). (4), 61, (1) pp. Fine combination of two works that are listed as a single item in the Elzevier catalogues of 1628 and 1644, both works in second French edition published in the same year as the first French edition, the first work also in the same year as a French edition by Jan van Waesberghe in Rotterdam. They are sought after by collectors of Elzeviriana, because they are the only two publications with the combined names of the brothers Matthieu and Bonaventura on the title. Both works were first published in Dutch, by Jan van Waesberghe, Rotterdam, 1617, with the title Castrametatio, dat is legermeting (...) respectively the title Nieuwe maniere van stercktebou, door spilsluysen. According to Jähns, the first work is of the utmost importance for the study of the Dutch regulations on army encampments of that time. The fine portrait is a copy in reverse after the famous print of ca. 1608 by Jacob Matham after Michiel van Mierevelt. The second work is especially important for its detailed explanation of the famous technical military use of water by the Dutch troops, mainly using sluices. In the final part, the work deals with the strategic possibilities from a hydrographical perscpective, of individual Dutch towns, depending on influence of the tides, distance to the sea, etc. etc. Reasonable copies.- (Some browning and (water)staining and occ. (marginal) defects; bookplate removed from upper pastedown and old (erased) entries on title-p. of the first work; binding slightly soiled).
Ad 1 and 2: Rahir 121 (with all the points indicated for the 2nd edition of both works) and Willems 149; Jähns p. 840-841. Ad 1: Simoni S259; Bierens de Haan 4576. For the portrait: New Hollstein Matham 246, note and cf. Frederik Muller, Portretten, no. 123. Ad 2: Simoni S261; cf. Bierens de Haan 4577, note.
